On Saturday, January 5, 2013, we recognized the National Sabbath to Stop Gun Violence, sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence. Our Guest Speaker was Shira Goodman. As mentioned above, Goodman is the Executive Director of CeaseFirePA, a coalition of citizens, mayors, police chiefs, faith leaders and community organizations taking a stand against gun violence in Pennsylvania. Shira has had a long career as a lawyer and public policy advocate, including ten years as Deputy Director of a statewide court reform organization and five years as a labor lawyer. CeasefirePA focuses on common sense regulations to keep legal guns from becoming illegal guns that ultimately are used in crimes and empowering Pennsylvanians to take a stand against gun violence in their communities, in the courtroom, in the legislature and at the ballot box. Her talk to congregants can be seen below.
AJ's Purim Celebration Goes Back to the Days of Disco!
On Saturday, February 23, 2013, AJ celebrated Purim in the spirit of earlier times with a disco-themed event: Saturday Night Purim Fever! AJ staff and congregants broke out their white suits, wide-legged bell bottoms, and platform shoes to bring in the holiday in disco style. Hazzan Glantz recreated the Purim story to the tunes of the 70's and a real disco ball lit the Orleans Auditorium. If you missed any of the fun, or want to relive it, here's a video of the service!
